How come when I connect a router to my dsl modem, I lose connection to the internet?
I have at&t dsl. My modem is a 2wire homeportal 1000hw. I want to connect a router to give internet to my bedroom and another room. The router is a linksys wireless g broadband router with 4 port switch model wrt54g. When I connect it, it works fine for about a day and then the "local network" light on my modem goes out and I cant use the internet until i disconnect the router and connect the modem directly to my computer. Please help!!
It looks to me like your 2wire IS a router. By attaching another router to it, you are probably getting conflicting IP addresses. It will work for a while, but once the leases are up on the IP addresses, things may go a little crazy.
Is there multiple ports on the back of your 2wire for additional devices? I could be wrong, but that device sounds like it works as a modem/router.
